Walgreens Prescription Savings Club

You may have heard about the recent failed negotiations between Walgreens and Express Script. What does this mean exactly? Because Walgreens and Express Scripts are no longer partnering, if your health care plan uses Express Scripts you will no longer be able to get your prescriptions filled at Walgreens. This is going to affect a great many people since Walgreens is a huge player in the pharmacy industry.

I appreciate the fact that Walgreens offers more stores that are open 24 hours a day and drive-thru pharmacies than any other pharmacy in the country (who wants to drag their kids into the store to pick up a prescription??). Add in the convenience of 90-day refills and walk-in flu shots and it’s easy to see that Walgreens is doing a lot for their customers.

America’s military service is sadly being affected by this situation as well. Tricare, the military’s health and prescription program is an Express Scripts client. Walgreens tried to work out a special deal with Express Scripts so that military families would not be negatively impacted but that offer was rejected as well.

To minimize the disruption to Walgreens Pharmacy customers, Walgreens is offering a special discount on annual membership for the Walgreens Prescription Savings Club through January 31st. An individual can join for only $5, or an entire family for $10. With the Prescription Savings Club at Walgreens, members can receive savings on more than 8,000 brand name and all generic medications. Regular annual membership is $20 for individuals and $35 for a family (still a great deal!)
